Midsummer Night’s Dream – (During the White Nights Festival, 1994)
(Translated by Olga)
Lane talking over the telephone by the Neva River, Saint Petersburg, Russia
“Eden? It’s Mason. Is Father home? …No-no. I’m in Saint Petersburg. No, not in Florida. I’m in Saint Petersburg in Russia!
Yes, I know I should be in Santa Barbara. No. No, it’s a long story. Please call dad, I’ll explain it all to him.
****************************************
A: I do not consider myself a singer. I’m rather an actor who likes to sing. This festival is like a prize for me.
Q: But do you sing in your shows?
A: Yes, when I act in a musical I sing myself.
Q: How did you become an actor, was it an inner impulse or a chance?
A: An inner impulse. My parents were amateur actors, I grew in this surrounding and chose this profession for myself in early
youth.
Q: What do you appreciate in a woman, first and foremost?
A: Erudition, decency and a sense of humor.
Q: Who’s the head of your family?
A: In my family? I think I am… though we’re equal with my wife.
Q: Do you have many friends?
A: I’ve got many acquaintances and colleagues but few intimate friends.
Q: We’ve got a video featuring the event of ‘Santa Barbara’ being awarded an Oscar. All the actors were present there, but
you were not there for some reason.
A: I attended only one of the first ‘Emmy’ ceremonies. Usually in summer I went to Georgia Shakespeare Festival, and it
coincides with the Emmy ceremony.
Q: When you were working at the role did you try to give Mason some traits of your own character?
A: Yes. We worked together with the writers. They took into consideration my manner of speech, my love of Shakespeare and
classics, my sense of irony.
Q: What other traits did you bring into the role?
A: Well, not so many. Mason drinks much more than I do, but both of us are partial to beautiful women and good life. He tends
to think the end justifies the means.
Q: Are these your traits as well?
A: To some extent.
Q: We've just watched the episodes where Mary got killed. You had such a wonderful duet. Were you, by any chance, in love
with this actress?
A: This is one of the hazards of our work: when you work together with someone four days a week, 12 hours per day, the
dividing line between real life and the onscreen life becomes very thin. It helps the show, the acting but creates many
problems in real life.
Q: You did not play the role of Mason up to the end, there was another actor cast in the role, wasn't there?
A: I did it for five years. At the same time I was busy with lots of other things: theatre, music, and I got very tired. I played Don
Quixote in ‘Man of La Mancha’ musical… When I quit I started a round-the-world trip, I traveled for 7 months.

Lane talking over the telephone by the Neva River:
“Dad? It’s Mason. Yes I know I must be there. No. No. I’m in Saint Petersburg… no, not in Florida. Dad, I’m in Russia!.. It’s a
very long story. I was traveling… I was late for changing planes in Frankfurt… Yes, well, on the flight from Paris they served
excellent wine. Yes, dad, I… yes, I fell asleep!
“Dad… dad! Okay, I’ll try to fly back as soon as possible. I… I’ve hired a translator – well, I do not understand a single word in
Russian. Dad, you don’t believe me again… I’ll buy a ticket and fly back immediately. I’ll prove everything to you when I’m
home… wait a minute, I’ll call someone… a minute - Valera! Come here! Say "Hello!" to my father…Say "Hello, CC!"
"Hello, Mr. C! It's Russia, and Mason's here! We're in Saint Petersburg! - It's a joke, friends!"

Interview with Valery Zakhariev (Mason’s Russian voice)
V.Z.: At this meeting, I’d like to give the laurels that I think I do not deserve, because many people watch the soap, they like
Mason – so I want to, these laurels, maybe not all, but share them with you.
L.D.: If I did not have a good Russian voice I would not be as popular and would not be known so well. Say, do beautiful
Russian girls approach you in the street?
V.Z.: Not long ago I gave an interview to ‘Natalie’ magazine, and they showed me three bags with letters addressed to me.
Actually it was not a very hard job, I was just following your acting, your intonations, the flow of your thought. At least I was
trying to do so. Say, was it the main thing in your life at the time?
L.D.: It took up a big part of my life, maybe the biggest part, as to my career. But in 6 months after I quit I had my first baby,
then the second. So the experience of Santa Barbara is still alive.
V.Z.: Lane, I’ve got one more serious question. Say – I understand that success brings a lot, but it has always seemed to me
that the only thing it does not give is true friends, for some reason it… it takes something away.
L.D.: It depends. It has lots of niceties... I think your best friends are the people you were friends with before you’ve become a
success.
V.Z.: Lane, one more acute topic. I know you’re a director and work at the theatre, you stage performances.
L.D.: As most actors, I started with playing and then took up directing. Little by little, I organized my own company. Our theatre
is one hour drive from Los Angeles. Now it’s taking up all my time. We’re getting ready to move into an art center, around $64
million has been invested there. We have not had a permanent stage for 6 years, now we’re going to have a new theatre near
Los Angeles.
V.Z.: And now, say something to your fans yourself.
L.D.: The first thing I’d like to say is that my impressions of Saint Petersburg and its citizens have surpassed my best
expectations. I think that Saint Petersburg is the gem of Europe, and I think it will happen very soon that it will surpass Paris
and Venice that are famous for their beauty.
