Things were pretty steamy in Mason and Julia's bedroom on a recent Thursday afternoon. That hard lovin'
pair was at it again and the temperature was definitely hot, even by Santa Barbara standards! At first, all
that could be seen was a tangle of bedcovers with bodies writhing underneath. When, at last Mason's head
emerged, he was wearing hell of a happy smile. By the time Julia came up for air, viewers all over the land
were gasping in disbelief. Many were probably surprised that the censors hadn't pulled the plug. "My
phoned didn't stop ringing the rest of the afternoon!" laughs the lady in question, Nancy Grahn (Julia) "All
my friends thought our love scene was so wild. I had no idea we'd create such a stir. It started out so
innocently. Lane Davies(Mason) and I played the scene under the covers simply because we had a love
scene scheduled and neither one of us wanted to go to the trouble of putting on all that messy body
make-up. So we decided to play it under the covers so we wouldn't have to. Instead of being romantic, we
created a mini-scandal!" Nancy takes her work very seriously, even work looks more like making whoopie.
"I guess Santa Barbara is the most risqué' of all the daytime shows." she says. "And Cruz and Eden have
pretty much cornered the lovemaking market. I mean, they are always in bed together. Lane and I wanted
to make our love scene different and amusing. We have a somewhat more sarcastic approach to love
scenes than Cruz and Eden. Our director Michael Gleona encouraged us to make the scene funny and
silly." Could it be Nancy is getting bored with the show and is just trying to liven things up a bit?
"Lane and I are both frustrated by our situation," Nancy admits. "I don't think Julia should nag him about
marriage. It's not in her character. I don't think the audience is buying this lag, this delay. I mean we are
obviously in love with each other and yet nothing is happening! We need some emotional conflict to play
with or else it gets really boring for me," she confesses. Nancy is more than willing to make suggestions
regarding Julia's storylines. "I'd like to see Julia get zany and wild for a change", she offers "but it's not
likely." She is very much the 80's woman, sane, methodical, a bleeding heart who does what is right. I'm
constantly coming up with stories for Julia which the writers won't pick up on." she says with a laugh.
"Lately I've been extremely boring I think." "God I wish they'd liven up our storyline!" It's not fair to me to do
the show on automatic pilot as I am now." Could this be another case of daytime burnout? "I'd like to do just
about anything else ," she admits, "for a little while at least. I need a rest. My contract is up in September
and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I guess it depends on how enticing they make it for me to stay."
Does this mean that Nancy Grahn is tired of daytime? "Oh no." she is quick to insist. "Soaps are the
greatest challenge for an actor. A lot of very fine stage and movie actors couldn't cut it on daytime
television. My daytime colleagues are the best!" Is Nancy a soap opera fan? "Oh yes," she exclaims. " I'm
usually working, but I watch every chance I get. I love to see what the others are doing. I love Kim's
(Zimmer) work. And Linda Dano's. Genie Francis is wonderful. Steve Nichols what an actor! Kathleen
Noone is marvelous. There are so many I love. I don't mean to sound like a grouch. I am a very lucky
woman to do this show and to work with Lane. We are very close. When you get right down to it," she
reflects, "I should be grateful. I mean, there are worse ways to make a living than being in Lane's arms!"
