Just Half Siblings
Time: Later in the evening of C.C.’s birthday party
Setting: The atrium of the Capwell home
Characters: Mason, C.C., and Eden
C.C.: I’m so glad you came home to stay. (Hugs Eden and
kisses her on the cheek.)
Eden: I am too.
Mason: (He’s been standing in the background watching
C.C. and Eden. Drunk and still drinking, he approaches
them.) My, my, what a cozy sight. The prodigal daughter
comes home to the bosom of the family.
Eden: Prodigal daughter. What’s that suppose to mean,
Mason?
Mason: Well, just that we haven’t heard a peep out of you for
months, and then one day, you come (looks upward)
parachuting in. (Laughs acerbically) Well, ‘we’re’ all just ‘so’
delighted.
Eden: Oh? You’re all so delighted?
Mason: Each and every ‘lucky’ one of us.
Eden: You know Mason, I really don’t know what’s happened to you since I’ve been
gone, but you better watch out.
Mason: Watch out for what?
Eden: That you don’t turn into a bitter, sarcastic, angry man. We all deal with our own
lives in this family. A lot’s handed to us but how we deal with it is our own problem. If
you’re not happy, Mason, you only have yourself to blame.
C.C.: Now, come on you two. That’s enough.
Mason: Eden, I don’t really need you to come parachuting
in on me for some armchair psychoanalyses.
Eden: Well, why don’t you listen for once? It might do you
some good.
Mason: (Laughs) Listen to the paragon of extraordinary behavior herself. We don’t
even have an inkling of what your life has been like for the past few years.
Eden: Maybe not, but at least I’m not bitter about it.
Mason: No, you’re not bitter. You’re gloating!
C.C.: Mason, I said that’s enough.
Eden: You know Mason; I’m not going to let you ruin my day. Okay? See you later. Bye
daddy, (Kisses C.C. on the cheek.) later.
C.C.: Bye. (Eden leaves the scene.)
Mason: Sorry dad, Eden and I have never been the best of friends, just half siblings.
