Joe On The Run Part 3
Video Clip: Joe On The Run Part 3
Characters: Mason, Peter, and Kelly

Setting: At Peter's apartment

Mason:
(Outside Peter’s door) It’s Mason I need to talk to you. (To detective) Wait here. (Peter
finally opens the door and Mason walks in.) I realize the polite thing to do would have been to call
first, Peter, but this just came up. Some police business that I think you might be able to help me
with.

Peter: Well, that’s very flattering, Mason, you coming to me for help but I don’t know what I could do
for you.

Mason: Well you have been such a help already. The call sent as to La Mesa, for example.

Peter: Oh, I take it you didn’t find Joe there?

Mason: No.

Peter: What do you want me to do?

Mason: Call Kelly.

Peter: What?

Mason: Well, it stands to reason she’s the only person who might know Joe’s whereabouts.

Peter: Use your head, Mason. I’m the last person that Kelly’s going to tell where Joe is.

Mason: Really, I thought you made some inroads with her.

Peter: Yeah, but nothing significant enough to get her to confide in me about his whereabouts.

Mason: Well, you heard she left home, that lets out dad and me. She’s at Sally Taylor’s. I have the
number right here. (Picks up the phone receive and holds it out for Peter.) Would you like me to dial
it for you?

Peter: No, I’ll do it (Takes the phone receiver and dials).

Kelly: Hello. Peter, how did you find me?

Peter: Someone at La Mesa told me, Kelly. Listen, I also heard there’s a warrant out for Joe’s
arrest, on a drug charge. Is that true?

Kelly: Yes, someone’s trying to frame him. I just heard on the radio that they found drugs planted
on his motorcycle.

Peter: That’s crazy! Anyone who knows Joe—

Kelly: I know, it doesn’t make any sense.

Peter: Is there anyway I can help?

Kelly: I don’t know. It looks pretty bad. Joe’s on the run and Mason’s leading the investigation.

Peter: Oh, Mason, huh? Good, old Mason, yeah I’ve heard about his pack of wolves down at City
Hall.

Kelly: I can’t believe it’s gone this far.

Peter: Listen, the first thing you got to do is find him a safe place to stay.

Kelly: Do you have any suggestions?

Peter: Yeah, why not my place?

Kelly: What?! Are you kidding?

Peter: Look, everyone knows that he hates me. Who would look here? It would be the last place.

Kelly: Yeah, but you’d be helping someone you hate.

Peter: That’s all changed, Kelly. I told you that.

Kelly: Yeah, but still—

Peter: Listen to me. I’ve been thinking about all those things you told me. More than ever I’m
starting to believe he’s innocent. Not just on the drug charge, but the murder too.

Kelly: No, I don’t want you to get involved, Peter. It’s nice of you. It means a lot to me, but this is our
problem.

Peter: No it’s not. It’s mine, too.

Kelly: Why your’s?

Peter:  Because more than anything, Kelly, I want you to be happy. If that means you and Joe are
going to have to be together, then I’ll just have to learn to accept it.

Kelly: Well, you’re very kind, Peter. But—

Peter: Let me help, Kelly. Okay? It would mean a lot to me. In a small way I’d be paying Joe back
for all the misery that I caused him.

Kelly: Well, I’ll have to talk to Joe first.

Peter: Are you going to see him tonight?

Kelly: Yeah, we’re meeting at the beach later.

Peter: The Beach! Kelly, that’s crazy. Even if it’s at night, there’s still going to be people all around.
Bring him back here, okay? Where it’s safe.

Kelly: We’ll have to think about it. But thank you very much, from both of us.

Peter: I’ll wait for you. I’ll be here all night.

Kelly: Okay.

Peter: All night, Kelly.

Kelly: All right! We’ll see. Thanks.

Peter: Okay, bye.

Mason: (Laughs) Very good, Peter. You handled that, well. Truly Machiavellian. Top-notch stuff.

Peter: Mason, she didn’t say if they’re going to come here or not. She’s got to talk it over with Joe.

Mason: Who if I heard you correctly, she’s meeting at the beach tonight.

Peter: Yeah. That’s a pretty big place.

Mason: Minor inconvenience, easily overcome. Well, thanks again, Peter. I won’t forget this.

Peter: I’ll make sure you don’t.

Mason: Well, let’s see how things turn out. Crafty character like Joe Perkins, you never know what
will happen.

Peter: Nail it, Mason.

Mason: Stick by your phone. You’ll be the first I call when he’s back behind bars.
