C.C.: (Angry and pacing) I'm telling you the situation with Joe Perkins is
getting worse! It's coming to a head and I want 'you' to handle it.
Mason: (Seated at a table, barely containing his own anger and
frustration with his father.) I've done everything I can do. I'd paid to have
inmates pick fights with him. I've spent; I don't know how much to have
him implicated in prison situations that would result in disciplinary
actions.

(This temporarily diffuses the tension between Mason and C.C.)
C.C.: Oh, thank you Rosa. (He takes the package from Rosa.) I'll open
this later. (Directed to Mason as he reads the return address and Rosa
exits,) Well, it's from your mother.
Mason: It is?
C.C.: I haven't received a gift from Pamela in years.
Mason: Oh, I get an occasional birthday present from her.
C.C.: I haven't even heard from her in 10 years. Do you know anything
about this?
Mason: No, nothing at all. Mother and I don't keep in very close touch.
Whatever it is I hope you enjoy it. Well, if you'll through with me I have
another appointment.
C.C.: All right, but just keep in mind what I said.
