| Setting: Santana's Apartment Characters: Mason, Santana, and Bill Larwin (Another attorney) Premise: Santana has been holding a meeting with her attorney inside her apartment. They are just finishing up and Santana is seeing the attorney to the door when the scene begins. Santana: Make sure all the points are covered. Okay? Bill: Call me tomorrow afternoon and I'll have them. Santana: All right. Thank you, Bill. (Opens the front door for Bill to exit, and Mason is on the other side getting ready to knock. Everyone is surprised.) Mason: Oh! Santana: Mason! Bill: Mason, hello. (Shakes hands with Mason.) Mason: Hello, Bill. Bill: It's been a while. Mason: Yes, it has. Bill: Goodnight Santana. Santana: Goodnight, Bill. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Bill: Okay. Mason: See you, Bill. Santana: (To Mason), come on in. Mason: Bill Larwin? Santana: Yes, he's a good friend of mine. Mason: Santana, if you need an attorney why didn't you come to me for recommendations? Santana: Well, I didn't want to impose on you, that's all. Mason: Well, it wouldn't have been an imposition. I'd like to be able to help you. Santana: Well, thank you. I'd like to be able to mix you a drink. What would you like? Mason: Same old thing. Santana: Scotch? Mason: Yes. We've been friends for a lot of years, Santana. I hate to think of you going to strangers for help. Santana: Well, we're not all that close, Mason. Mason: (Taking on a teasing tone.) Oh, how quickly they forget. Don't you remember that time, years ago, we were wading in our fishpond and you told me you wanted to marry me more than anything else in the entire world? Santana: (Laughs.) Mason! I did not! Mason: (Sits down on a chair in her living room.) Are you denying that you made overtures to me? Santana: I certainly do. I remember very clearly 'you' were the one that asked me to marry you. (Hands him his scotch and sits down on the couch.) And you threw me in the pond. Mason: Threw you? Certainly not! Santana: Yes you did, but I'm glad you did because it was 'so' hot. Hey, you didn't come over here to reminisce did you? Mason: Well, why not? It's fun. Santana: I suspect that you have something more on your mind. (Pause.) You know, you've been acting very strange lately. Mason: Have I? Santana: Are you still worried about your father's birthday party? Mason: Well, I'm not overly optimistic about it but it's not taking over my life. Santana: Good. I hope not. Mason: I made a few foolish remarks and somehow they got recorded without my knowledge. Worse than foolish, actually, my father would think of them as malicious. Santana: C.C. loves you very much. Mason: One thing that I did not come here to talk about is C.C. Capwell. Santana: Sorry. I just wanted to make you feel better. (The phone rings.) Santana: Excuse me. (She gets up to answer the phone.) Mason: Let's talk about why telephones were ever invented. Santana: (Giggles as she picks up the receiver.) Hello. (She changes her voice to become softer and more seductive.) Hello. (Pause,) No, I haven't I'm afraid, (Pause,) uh, about a half of an hour or so. (Pause,) Okay. Thanks. I appreciate it. (Pause,) Okay. Bye. (She hangs up the phone.) Mason: Don't tell me that you have another date? (Gets up and walks over to her.) Santana: I have, and don't ask me with who because I'm not going to tell you. Mason: I wouldn't dream of it. Santana: Well, you've been known to do that in the past. I wasn't aware of the fact that you have reformed. Finish your drink. Mason: Thanks. Santana, what are your ambitions? I mean, ultimately. Do you want to be the most famous decorator in the entire world? Santana: No. Mason: What then? Do you want to get married, have a family, bake little cookies with the kids? Santana: Yes, I do, and I want to decorate. Mason: You are aware that you do have the opportunity to choose from a number of men for your husband. Some of them can make life better than the others. Santana: You're right. Mason: About a number of things. Santana: I'll buy that. Mason: What I'm trying to say is that I think I could help you realize your goals. I mean, better than most men could. All I need is (voice gets shaky,) a chance and some encouragement. Santana: Mason, uh, don't you think you're letting nostalgia take over and color your thinking? Mason: No, I don't think so. I thought the world of you when we were kids and I still feel the same way now, in a more mature fashion, of course. Santana: I'm flattered, thank you. Mason: Well, you don't have to thank me because I don't seem to have much control over it. I can't really take credit for it. Am I being foolish? Santana: No. It's sweet and I appreciate it. Mason: Appreciation, that's a silly kind of emotion. Santana: Not for me, it isn't. For me it.s very warm and real. Mason: Is it, Santana? Santana: Well, (She checks the time on her wristwatch.) I better not let time slip away from me. Mason: Santana, I sort of would like to finish now that I've started. I.m kind of on a roll. Will you hear me out? Santana, I felt that you were the most extraordinary woman I know. Santana: Mason- Mason: No, no, I've watched you. I've thought about it and I've hoped that one day you and I might-possibly-well- Santana: Mason, I can't take you too seriously when you are so sincere. Mason: Why not? Santana: Because it's not like you. And besides I feel like you're making fun of me. Mason: Well, I'm not. It's just I don't show this side of myself very often. Santana: Please, don't say anymore. I don't want to hear it. Mason: Are you afraid? Santana: Afraid of what? Mason: Your feelings, anything else? Santana: I just don't want to hear anymore, that's all. Mason: I'm not trying to come on to you too strongly. I just felt I needed to say it. I'm certainly not asking any thing of you. Santana: Good. I was just starting to get worried that you were getting a little bit possessive and I was starting to feel suffocated. Mason: Well, it was never intended. I guess I went a little crazy a few years ago when you said I wasn't half the man my brother was. That made me pretty angry. Santana: I'm sorry. I didn't have the right to say that. Mason: I'd rather you thought you were wrong about it, not just wrong in saying it. (He pauses but she doesn't reply.) Anyway, it was a long time ago and I shouldn't be dragging it up. Wrong or not, I still think about it. Santana, I honestly don't know if my feelings about you are a blessing or a curse. Santana: I've never led you on, have I? Mason: You lead me on by just being here. Santana: Mason, I still have work to get done at the office. I'm really going to have to go. Mason: Yes, then you have that mysterious date. Santana: It isn't mysterious to me. Try to understand. (She kisses him on the cheek.) And thank you for what you said. I'll never forget it. Mason: Immortal words of Mason Capwell. Well, as the walrus said, time has come, I suppose. One day I hope you'll be going out with me. Thanks for the drink. Santana: You're welcome, Mason. Goodbye. Mason: Goodbye, how easily she says that word. Santana: Well, I've had plenty of years of practice. Mason: Maybe too many. Chow. Santana: Bye. |
