Sitting: In the guest bedroom in the Capwell mansion.

Characters: Mason and Cruz
|
|
|
|
Premise: Cruz is working undercover with a secret police force. While on the
job, he puts out a fire on a Capwell oil rig that was threatening Santa Barbara
Harbor. CC is so grateful, that he invites Cruz to come and stay with the
Capwells while he recovers from injuries sustained while fighting the blaze.
Cruz grew up with Santana, whom Mason is interested in, and they are still
great friends, making Mason jealous. Also, Cruz grew up with Joe Perkins,
Kelly's ex-fiancé who was just released from prison for the murder of Channing
Capwell Jr. As seen here, Cruz and Mason didn't get off on the right foot with
each other.

Mason: (Entering Cruz' bedroom). Cruz? You wanted to see me?
|
|
|
|
Cruz: (Sitting up in his bed). Oh, Mason, yeah, come on in.
|
|
|
|
Mason: How are you feeling? Are you comfortable? Can I get
you anything?
|
|
|
|
Cruz: No. I'm fine. Thanks. I just wonder if you could answer a
couple of questions for me.
|
|
|
|
Mason: Glad to if I can.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: What happened to those two thugs who beat up on Joe Perkins in the bus station up
North?
|
|
|
|
Mason: That's, um, out of my jurisdiction. I assume they're looking into it up North.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: You don't know anything? You haven't kept up on it?
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Laughs). I got enough work of my own, Cruz. I don't go out looking for more.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Hmm, Somebody must have hired them? Right?
|
|
|
|
Mason: Could be.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: And that somebody could be in Santa Barbara? More than likely, in fact, the
investigation could very well end up falling within your jurisdiction.
|
|
|
|
Mason: Could. Could start raining golf balls, too. Anything is possible.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: (Chuckles humorlessly). Yeah. What about the shotgun? You know the-the blast
that was aimed at Joe's head but only took out the window of the bus he was riding in.
|
|
|
|

|
|
Mason: Yeah? What about it?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Who did it?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Mason: We don't know.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Then, you are investigating that one?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Mason: Yeah.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cruz: That must be in your dist-well that's a good thing, I guess. So you'll probably have to
drop that too. Huh?
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Gives Cruz an icy stare). Glad you're feeling better, Cruz. (Starts to turn to leave).
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Any leads?
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Stops). If there were, I couldn't give them out.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Then, um, you can confirm there are leads?
|
|
|
|
Mason: I can neither confirm nor deny. Any more questions?
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Yeah. What about the guy who tossed a bomb into the Perkins' house.
|
|
|
|
Mason: Oh, now, I can answer that. A neighbor saw the guy. We bought him in for
questioning. He was identified and-and he's been released on bail, pending trial.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Who is he?
|
|
|
|
Mason: Thomas. Jeremy, R or E, I don't remember which. Jeremy Thomas.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Hmm. What was his motive?
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Laughs). You know, you make a good libelant, Cruz. If you ever give up
fighting oil rig fires, you ought to think about law school.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Thanks. What was his motive?
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
Mason: Well, my impression is, the man just didn't like the ideal of Joe
Perkins being back in Santa Barbara.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Hmm. And who put him up to it?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Exhales). No one.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cruz: How do you know that?
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Mason: It's my business to know, Cruz, take my word for it. (Turns to leave again, gets
nearly to the door this time before Cruz speaks out).
|
|
|
|
Cruz: I got to tell you something.
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Exhales and turns back to face Cruz). You mean there's more?
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Yeah.
|
|
|
|
Mason: I'm a busy man, Cruz.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: I get the impression that Joe would be much better off if you'd simply remove
yourself from the case, and assign any other assistant D.A. to it.
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Walks back to Cruz's bedside). You don't know what you're talking about.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: It's very clear that you're not exactly eager to press charges against
anyone who tried to hurt Joe Perkins.
|
|
|
|
Mason: That's a hell of a thing for a houseguest to say.
|
|
|
|
Cruz: Yeah. Well, I'm sorry, but you know, the guy's my friend. He's my friend. And
somebody tried to kill him a couple of times. Now, I think somebody ought to get off
their butt and do something about it.
|
|
|
|
Mason: (Heads for the door, but as he exits, Cruz has one more thing to say).
|
|
|
|
Cruz: If not then he and I are going to raise one big tint in this community.
|
