A Change in Direction
Video Clip: A Change in Direction
Time: Later that same day
Setting: Mexican Food Restaurant
Characters: Mason and Kelly
Premise: Kelly invites Mason to join her in lunch because she's worried about him.
Kelly: (Sitting at a table looking at a menu, she looks up as Mason walks in) Glad you
could make it.
Mason: Yeah, it worked out. Dad still has that problem with the rig, and Santana wanted to
see him, so I slipped out.
Kelly: I called because I'm worried about you, Mason.
Mason: Oh, I was afraid of that. Let me assure you that this morning was an aberration;
you caught me at a bad time. I'm back to my old self, debonair, charming, as usual.
Kelly: (Giggling) How's work?
Mason: Oh, fine. We're incarcerating vermin right and left.
Kelly: Hmm, and your political campaign?
Mason: Well, that's strange that you should ask.
Kelly: It's not strange.
Mason: Yeah, it is strange because I-umm, I've been thinking about it a lot lately.
Maybe you've been reading my thoughts. Now, I doubt that, actually.
Kelly: Is it going well?
Mason: Umm, what do mean?
(A waiter approaches and asks for their order.)
Kelly: A tostada.
Mason: Ah, I think I'll have something a little more graceful. Mmmm, chicken flauta.
(The Waiters collects their menus and walks away.)
Kelly: Mason, I'll make telephone phone calls, stuff envelopes, I'll do whatever you want for
the campaign.
Mason: Thank you. (Fidgets)
Kelly: Is it going well?
Mason: The campaign? (Kelly nods) Very. But I've been thinking about it a lot because I may
not be going with it.
Kelly: What!?
Mason: (Chuckles) I'm not sure I what to be district attorney.
Kelly: Why not?
Mason: Well, it's the first step to what dad hopes is a dazzling political career, and I'm
not sure I want a political career, dazzling or otherwise.
Kelly: I thought you wanted to be somebody big. Like governor of California or Senator
maybe.
Mason: I thought so too, for a while.
Kelly: But no longer?
Mason: I honestly don't know.
Kelly: You've done some heavy thinking.
Mason: Yes. By the way, I'd appreciate it if you didn't
tell our father of any of this.
Kelly: I won't.
Mason: Good, thank you. One of the thoughts that has been festering in my brain, is
the fact that should I win the election, should I actually become district attorney,
everyone would know that it was Capwell money that bought the position.
Mason: (Chuckles) Oh, I know.
Kelly: Daddy will be very disappointed if you don't run.
Kelly: Mason! He's been talking about this for years!
Mason: Yeah, first to Channing, later to me.
Kelly: You know, you don't need to keep comparing
yourself to Channing.
Mason: Mmm, no I don't need to, I do it compulsively. Some people like to pull the
wings off flies; I like to compare myself to my godlike brother. You know, Dad called him
the toast of two continents. Some times a phrase like that gets burned into your brain
like a...a brand on a bull.
Kelly: I think this is just a bad day for you. I think it has a lot to do with you not getting
enough sleep.
Mason: Yeah, I whooped it up all night.
Kelly: Did you like it? What's her name?
Mason: Oh, Miss Patricia Hampton. Well named, come to think of it. A night with her is
like a week in the country. But our father thinks of her like a tramp.
Kelly: Oh, you're fine. Your taste in women is fine. Look, you do exactly what you want
about not running for district attorney.
Mason: (Chuckles) I think you're saying I have your permission to be me.
Kelly: Exactly.
Mason: You know me a good deal better than I usually allow myself to be known, Kelly.
I would appreciate it if you'd keep your insights to yourself, that you didn't even tell your
soon-to-be husband, Peter.
Kelly: You can trust me. Do you like Peter, Mason?
Mason: Yeah, quite a lot. I only wished that he liked you as much as he likes being one
of the Capwells. (
She looks taken back by that). Now, once we've started being honest
with each other, Kelly, we can't just go back to being polite. Can we?
